Background of the study
Instagram captions, as part of visual storytelling, have become a site of morphological experimentation in Nigeria. Users craft captions that complement images and videos by creating new word forms through blending, abbreviation, and creative affixation. These linguistic innovations often emerge from the need to succinctly convey complex ideas within the visual context of Instagram posts (Afolabi, 2023). The interplay between text and imagery fosters a hybrid form of expression that challenges traditional morphological norms. This study explores how visual storytelling influences morphological processes in Nigerian Instagram captions, examining the extent to which these innovations reflect cultural trends and digital creativity (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the increasing prevalence of creative morphological practices in Instagram captions, there is limited systematic research on how visual storytelling influences word formation in Nigerian digital communication. Existing studies often focus on visual aspects or cultural commentary, leaving a gap in understanding the linguistic mechanisms at play (Chukwu, 2024).
